Sounds Gross, Is Awesome – Prunes
On today’s episode of “Sounds Gross, Is Awesome” I feature prunes.
Not just any prunes, mind you. Sunsweet Orange Essence Prunes.
I know, I know. I say the word “prune” and y’all run for the hills as though an entire army of blue-haired, walker-using, mumu-wearing nannas were hot on your tailpipes, but bear with me.
I’m not a fan of prunes. Prune Juice weirds me out, because it tastes like raisins, and raisins ain’t supposed to be liquid. They’re chewy, and housed inside a gloriously moist oatmeal cookie or dotting my breakfast cereal. One does not SIP a well-bred raisin. That’s okay, I’m not trying to get you to drink prune juice.
Prunes, for all the name has such horrid connotations, are actually made from PLUMS.
If I call them “dried plums” they don’t sound half bad, now do they?
The “dried” part is even a partial misnomer – these aren’t your brick disks of dried banana you find in a boring trail mix. These are the perfect texture – not too dry, not too messy, and sized perfectly for snacking.
Even so, the normal prunes do nothing for me. They lack pizazz.
The orange essence prunes, on the other hand, are fan-friggin-tabulous. They’re delicious, sweet, healthy (mmm, fiber-licious!), and store well at my desk at work to fend off unexpected hunger pangs.
Seriously. If you like fruit, I -highly- recommend getting a bag of these and trying them.

Dried fruit is one of my favorite things in the world to snack on. Also good: Craisins, Dried apricots, apples. I found some magical banana chips dipped in chocolate one time. That was the best day ever.
I’m going to the grocery store tonight…these prunes are definitely getting bought <3
@Courtney
I am slowly coming around to other dried fruits. Apricots are really good, especially when added to oatmeal. <3
I can’t think of prune juice without thinking of that one episode of ST:TNG where Guinan convinces Worf to try some. We actually get a smile and a laugh out of the dour fellow. “Ah! Warriors drink!”
@Grimmtooth
*laughs* Oh, I must’ve missed that episode! I need to go back and rewatch. I do have a novel that is an x-men/star trek crossover, and Wolverine orders Worf’s “Warriors drink!” and it was prune juice. Funniest scene in the book!
I have nothing to say about prunes, dried plums, or anything else (okay…I’m rather fond of dates, but they aren’t, technically, a dried fruit), except to admire that tres cool CommentLuv icon down there. *grin*

It was in the prologue, if I remember correctly. Shouldn’t be too hard to find.
I adore dried fruit – especially cranberries, cherries, and apricots. (And yes, they are all delish on top of oatmeal).
I don’t really dig dried bananas, but dried apple slices are yummy too – just very sticky.
I recently bought a box of “fiber pop-tarts’ they actually aren’t bad, and one (not the 2 in the package) is enough to fill me up in the morning (with mu iced coffee and skim, of course). The husband, however, gagged at the idea, making some comment about “poop tarts” under his breath.

I’ve tried those poptarts! They’re…okay. Edible, but better with a glass of milk. Very dry and crumbly, and less sweet. I prefer to have a bowl of Fiber One cereal if I’m looking for fiber – much more better than the poptarts.
