New Art! Turtle-tastic!

by     16 Comments    Posted under: Artist Sketchbook

I have a very good friend who is expecting a child soon. My favorite way to celebrate this sort of event is, naturally, with art.

Turtles, in this case. First, we had to choose between landbound tortoises or seabound turtles.

Aye. Sea turtles.

Wowza, look at the adam’s apple on that one!

Then came the inking.

Turtles are notoriously frightened by the prospect of being alone in space and need the comfort of a friend as well as their comfort star-shaped pillows.

Then, of course, the coloring!

The swim is so very far .. won’t you hold my flipper?

  • Squeeeeeeeeee!

    Oh my crap the cute

    • <3<3 Thank you! I've got a LOT of art posts ready to go up (you should totally keep an eye out for the Friday one!) but I'll admit to a soft spot for the turtles!

  • They’re wonderful! I especially love the little guy with the big adam’s apple. He has the cutest face!

    • Hee! I sketched SO many turtles before he came out. I love his great big, puffy feets.

  • My heart is full. :]

  • Oh my! Those lil fellas are gorgeous! I love your pencil skills :)

    • ^_^ I had a lot of fun, once I got a style down for them. I’d never drawn a turtle before! (well, not since stickfigure days, anyway)

  • I would have thought LBB would have gotten frogs.

I love the turtles on stars. That is more than adorable.
Jessica agrees that those are wonderful drawings and perfect for a baby. We love them.

And then on a technical side…how come your pencil sketches look blue? Is that a scanning issue or a special pencil issue? And how are you coloring those? I buy enough pencils and “crayons” that you can be specific.

    • Miss KristenSue requested the utterly genderless turtles and I was happy to oblige. ^_^

One of these days, I do need to draw ninja frogs though. *firm nod*

I swapped to blue lead for sketching after an art friend let me borrow his, and then he had to pry it out of my hot little fists to get it back. I use a regular mechanical pencil body and fill it with the only blue mechanical pencil lead I’ve found. It doesn’t erase superwell, but it also lends itself to detailed/shaded sketches AND when I scan them in, the sketches are actually legible.

I used to scan and then do a lot of leveling to get the sketches to look even this good

But now I can scan in even very tiny random sketches like this one to share.

As to the coloring, I ink with a team of one small and one fat micron pen (a quick once-over, then heavy erasing to get rid of the blue sketch lines, then more detailed work on the second round).

I color exclusively with Prismacolor colored pencils. I’ve tried a lot of brands, and Prismacolors blend the best for me – just the right amount of waxiness. They’re expensive, but it takes me a while to go through all but the super common colors. Beyond the initial investment they aren’t too bad.

I do have to sharpen them with a mechanical pencil sharpener, though. I lost a LOT of pencils to broken lead when I used hand-held manual sharpeners. They’re finicky.

If you have any other questions, do feel free to ask! <3
