New Theme In The Works

by     5 Comments    Posted under: In Which I Blog About Blogging

I love the blog theme I’m currently using, I really do.

Unfortunately, so do a LOT of other people. It’s a free theme, and it’s fabulous (so I can hardly blame them) but I want my site to stand out. When four other blogs in my feed reader also use this theme, I don’t think I’m “standing out” very well.

It wouldn’t be so bad if two of them weren’t also writer blogs!

So! New theme in the works. It won’t be as fancy as this one, because I’m not a web designer and don’t really have the tools or time to become one.

However, I know how to code and I can crank out random doodles with the best of them. Let’s see if I can combine those two into a fun theme, shall we?

No promises on when it’ll get done, but it’s in the works!

  • Oooo! can’t wait to see!

If you want help, email me. I used to design websites so I *might* be able to give you some feedback.

oooOh, I think I might take you up on that. I’ve got what (I hope) is the basic colors and structure down, now it’s tweaking time.

And sketching time. I have the most adorable bunny ready for inking to go on the header!

  • Ah, the blog redesign! I’ve spent more hours than I care to disclose on web design. It’s a real love/hate relationship. And, as you can tell, I’ve always tried to go 100% custom just so I know no one else out there is doing my thang.

I still like the classic BTTF layout: http://version2.backtothefridge.com

I finally had to change it since it seemed to confuse so many people. (“Yes, it really is a blog. I swear!”)

    • It’s funny – when I look at free themes, I like the complex ones with the neat graphics. When I design something for myself, it typically ends up much simpler and much less image-intensive.

I made this one from the new twentyten wordpress theme and I’m really liking it. I do need to add a few graphics, but since they’ll be home-grown, they take time. The header graphic is inked, but not yet colored. =]

    • ALSO, I also like that old blog design! If you made the fridge magnet categories available as a header or sidebar widget, I’d say it’s still usable!
