iPhone/iPad Games for RPG Lovers
I know this is a controversial statement, but not everyone likes Angry Birds.
That’s akin to standing up at a fantasy writing convention and declaring that one doesn’t like the Wheel of Time, but it’s true.
Some of us like a little adventure and theorycraft in our gaming. For you, brave gamer, I present two games.
Battleheart
Don’t let the cutesy graphics fool you – Battleheart is more complex and challenging than it first appears. Assemble your chosen team and cleanse the realm from dangerous (and adorable) enemies. You control the entire team, and as they level up, you choose their abilities.
The generic classes have two options apiece – tank, rogue, dps warrior – but my favorite team was my “oddballs”. I had a witch, a sorceress, a monk for my tank, and a bard for my healer. I had to do some extra micro-managing and really utilize the crowd-control abilities to make it work, but I definitely felt like I earned my successes. Gear upgrades and unlocked abilities kept this game fun enough that I wasn’t ready for it to be over when I defeated the final boss.
Also, Mr. Moore and I each had our own “team” and took turns leveling up. Technically, we were playing the same game, but our teams were so different that we had some great conversations about strategies and different viewpoints on the same battles.
GREAT game – fun, pretty, clean, and challenging.
Dungeon Raid
Dungeon Raid is a bizarre combination of matching games (think Bejeweled) and RPGs. It sounds unlikely, but much like chocolate covered bacon, it just WORKS.
Trace a path to connect like items. Collect coins to buy new gear, shields to keep your armor at max, potions to heal yourself from damage, and swords/skulls to defeat your enemies and gain XP and new skills.
Boss skulls with different abilities will appear and take extra work to defeat. Unlock new race/class combos to give special abilities (the dwarf warrior does extra damage to enemies that you attack from below, as an “uppercut”) and weaknesses (the werewolf race takes extra damage from the vampire boss skull). Level up your favorite race/class to get access to extra bonuses.
Honestly, I was skeptical when I bought the app, but this deceptively simple game has kept me playing FAR longer than Bejeweled ever did.
Unroast
Today, I love that I lip synch to songs while I’m at work, rocking out in hopefully-empty hallways.

I know this is a controversial statement, but not everyone likes people who don’t like Wheel of Time : )
*laughs* Is this the part where I point out that I was talking about myself?
I love me some Battleheart. I was crazy and leveled up all the little guys to max level – the berserkers were FUN dps’ers, and meshed really well with rogues. Plus, since I’m evil, the black knight had to be my tank. Just had to. ;)
Also, not sure if anyone’s a fan, but the old 7th Guest and 11th Hour games are (or will be, soon) available for iPhone and iPad – some very classic puzzle/horror games that are worth a play or twenty. It’s a shame that Trilobyte Games went under – I would have loved to see the final installment to this series come to fruition.
Yikes, all the way to max level? WOW! Now that’s impressive! There’s word of an update coming up, too!
7th Guest and 11th Hour are new to me – but sounds like something I’d really enjoy on my ipad!
7th Guest and 11th Hour were pretty great games, overall. Lots of really dumb jokes and some fun puzzles. Sadly, they don’t necessarily work on more modern systems since Trilobyte went extinct (haha).
Well, when you’ve got a lot of free time at the office… *blush*
As far as 7th Guest/11th Hour, Definitely play them on the iPad if you can help it, unless you have very slender fingers. Sometimes it’s easy to screw up a puzzle if you happen to fatfinger one of the clickables. Makes me wish I could use a stylus.
I wish I could set up a “change alert” on apps.
I’ve got four or five that I’m waiting to see if there’s a price drop on, and I’d love to be notified when those show up in the store. If they’re even there – I can’t find a way to search for them. = [
Dungeon Raid sounds like Legend of Fae (which I initially saw on Steam, but is also here http://endlessfluff.com/lof_info.html).
I played a Majesty demo on my Droid and it was pretty fun and I just downloaded some game called “BattleSheep”.
And speaking of random games that aren’t really on mobile/tablet devices, http://www.humblebundle.com/.
Legend of Fae is windows only. *sheds a tear* (the games I recommended are iSomething only, so it’s fair)
Battlesheep sounds hilarious.
Humble Bundle is such a great idea. Love that kind of stuff!
Turns out BattleSheep is kindof like minesweeper, but you use explosives to find the hidden sheep.
I wonder if anyone will port “Cthulhu Saves the World” or “Breath of Death VII: The Beginning” over to a phone platform.
That sounds awesome … but not as awesome as your zombie game, which I am determined that you shall make.
For the more “rogue-like” version of RPGs (is it an RPG in that case? I guess it has stats and gear). Try “Legends of Yore”
Interesting! I like that it lets you play it on the site there.
