Fitocracy in Review
Following Up
So, as some of you might remember, I tried out Fitocracy a while ago.
Now that I’ve had it for a while, I have to say …. meh.
Which is SUCH a shame, since I was super excited about it.
However, the site feels like it’s geared more towards folks who work out a LOT, and less towards folks like me, who think that “jogging” is totally exercise.
“Jogging” isn’t even in the list of activities available. Which seems silly, but on the opposite end of the scale, a gamer friend of mine who does P90X (we’re not ALL lazy slobs, regardless of what the media will tell you) tried it and became disgruntled while trying to enter in some P90X workouts.
I then tried another website which didn’t even have “pushups” in the menu … so it looks like I’m back to just working out without recording it anywhere.
Not a big loss, just … meh.
Anyone Else
Did anyone else find success with fitocracy, or did you too succumb to the staggeringly rigid exercise list?

I still poke at it, and try to figure out what fits what, but I share the same frustration. It’s also hard to navigate their naming conventions for weight/strength training. My local Y has those fancy hydraulic weight machines, but I haven’t really logged them in Fitocracy because I’m not sure how they translate.
Still a neat concept, and I appreciate you letting me snag one of your invites. :)
I love the concept of it — I just think it’s difficult to build a site like that which appeals to a broad audience. I know I’m at a different level of fitness-ism than they seem to be targeting.
I’m not sure, if I were running the site, how I’d manage to solve the problem of flexible activities while still assigning point values to them.
I use myfitnesspal.com. The exercise list is much more comprehensive and easier to add items to.
However, the food lists there are much more tedious. When is someone going to make a fitness site that is fast and easy enough to make it worth the time spent?
And when are they going to start letting you scan bar codes into your phone and have the nutrition data uploaded to the site?
Sheesh, maybe we need to go into the biz.
Ugh, I can only imagine how complex some of that stuff would be. Just looking at calorieKing and other websites makes my head spin.
Still, I wish someone WOULD tackle it properly. There’s always a solution, right? (Love the barcode idea!!)
no fitrocracy, but I’ve used sparkpeople before. It served my needs.
I’ve heard a lot of people mention sparkpeople. It seems amazing just how many of these sites there are, no?
One nice thing that I just noticed, today: They’re definitely adding activities, and they’ve made it very easy to suggest ones they should add. If I type in “prenatal yoga”, it doesn’t find it, but it pops up a simple link I can click to suggest that it be added.
Also, I have been using “cycling (stationary)” for my Spinning class, but I noticed today that they’ve added Spinning as an option.
Honestly, I still poke at it, but I haven’t see much in Fitocracy that makes me want to use it forever for any reason. I guess I’m not taking enough advantage of the social aspects or something.
It might be more useful if it included locations and could help introduce me to people who work out in my gym and would be potential friends / workout buddies.
I think the grouping/buddy system is definitely something it could benefit from. Even if you’re not in the same area, if you could know someone else was Spinning the same day as you, you would have someone to cheer you on and give accountability to.
