My Treasure Box
Jadies and Lentilmen, may I introduce to you: My Treasure Box. Otherwise known as my Idea Box, this is where I keep brain flotsam that I don’t want to lose.
The Breakdown
Note, if you will, the clever use of office supplies to organize my writing ideas.
- Hanging file folder box? Check, and in a dashing shade of black.
- Hanging file folders? Check. Functional and dignified.
- Pretty pastel idea folder? Checkety check, my good friend.
- Pastel folders stuffed to the brim with anything and everything I can find? Triple check.
Folders
Other folders I have include
- Two different Choose folders
- One folder for each continent on Taven (Skrylar, Zonduth, Artigul’Uvaroth, Thrond, History)
- Blue Moon
- Random Ideas
- Taxidermist
- Pony Express (which takes place on Zonduth, and is filed accordingly near the Zonduth folder)
Folder Contents
As an example, you’ll find I pulled open my Choose folder. In it, I have:
- Sketches (shown are: shonfra, alchemist guns, spider gadgets, and the Miraj)
- Random notes, scribbled on whatever paper was handy when I took them.
- Outlines for content (shown is the Extra Content outline from Volume 2)
- Pages ripped from my creative notebook.
Before developing this filing system, my notes were everywhere.
I lost many of them, but I don’t mind telling you that going through ten years of spiral notebooks and folders and scattered sticky notes and sketch books was NOT pleasant. Much, much, much, MUCH better to have all those various bits and pieces in one repository.
Wiki
Note also that my digital content is stored in personal wikis.
Choose, for example, has a lovely wiki (and no you may NOT have a link on account of spoilers) that I’m finally getting fully fleshed out, thanks to the hiatus while I run the Extra Content. The wiki contains digital versions of any important notes in my box as well as additional information only found on the web. (Again, may I tell you the joys of consolidating a ton of emails, google docs, and google waves into a single wiki? *shudders* I shall have nightmares for all eternity.)
Organization
THIS is how I keep my ideas straight. This is how I do not lose new ideas, how I maintain the usefulness of a creative writing notebook whose contents may vary widely from project to project, and how I never lose that key element scribbled hastily on a napkin during a pit stop on a long car ride.
You?
How do you maintain your ideas? Do you have a similar system? Something totally different?
